The Legends

Ansel Adams, the most iconic landscape photographer in history, pioneered black-and-white photography and the Zone System. His breathtaking images of Yosemite and the American West set the gold standard for landscape photography.

2. Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944) – Brazil
Though primarily a documentary photographer, his Genesis project showcases some of the most powerful black-and-white landscapes ever created. His work highlights the connection between landscapes and human impact.

3. Galen Rowell (1940–2002) – USA
Galen Rowell, a pioneer of adventure landscape photography, developed the “dynamic landscape” style, capturing dramatic light and action in remote locations. His vibrant images of the Himalayas and the American West remain iconic.

4. Edward Weston (1886–1958) – USA
Edward Weston, a master of modern photography and co-founder of Group f/64, was known for his minimalist, sharply detailed landscapes. His iconic Mojave Desert and Oceano Dunes series exemplify his pure, high-focus approach.

5. Michael Kenna (b. 1953) – UK
Michael Kenna is a master of long-exposure black-and-white photography, known for his minimalist, dreamlike landscapes of Japan, France, and China. His work has profoundly influenced a generation of fine art landscape photographers.

6. Don McCullin (b. 1935) – UK
Though best known as a war photographer, Don McCullin’s black-and-white landscapes are deeply emotional and dramatic. Capturing Somerset, Scotland, and the Middle East, his moody lighting, dark skies, and high contrast create a haunting, almost cinematic beauty.

7. Art Wolfe (b. 1951) – USA
Art Wolfe is a master of color, composition, and environmental storytelling, blending fine art with documentary photography. His vibrant landscapes, wildlife, and cultural imagery showcase remote regions with a painterly style inspired by classical art and indigenous cultures.
