Discover the Best International Magazines for Photographers

Comic book-style illustration of an open photography magazine on a rustic wooden table, bathed in soft natural light from a nearby window. The magazine pages showcase stunning travel and street photography. A vintage camera, a steaming cup of coffee, and fresh flowers surround the scene, creating a nostalgic and cozy atmosphere. The muted, subtle colors and 80s-inspired aesthetic highlight the contrast between print media as a source of creative inspiration and the digital age.

Thinking of books and magazines, takes me to the yesteryears of stopping by a newsstand, flipping through those glossy pages, the scent of fresh print, the touch of a magazine in my hands—an experience no screen can replicate. As a kid in the ’90s, I remember grabbing the latest issue of my favorite kids magazine, devouring every page in just two days, and then eagerly waiting for the next one. That tangible connection felt deeply personal. Today, with digital content overflooding every corner of our lives, I find myself longing for those carefully curated pages even more, particularly when I see print magazines disappearing day by day.

Coming back to the reality, where social media thrives and algorithms dictates the terms, we are just reduced to “user” as opposed to a “reader”. Having wasted my time on social media in early years, now I solely rely on books, magazines and serious blogs for a real learning. The reason is obvious, unlike social media content where there is no curation or quality control, every photograph and story featured in a top photography magazine goes through rigorous selection, expert editing, and thoughtful curation, making it a far superior resource for learning and inspiration. Every image, every article in a magazine is chosen with a purpose, making it a far richer resource for those who seek to truly understand and grow in their craft. If you want to move beyond trends and instant gratification, if you crave something more than just another scroll through a never-ending feed, investing in a great photography magazine is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

Whether you’re a travel photographer chasing golden-hour landscapes, a street shooter drawn to the poetry of everyday life, or an admirer of fine art, the right magazine can be your gateway to new techniques, industry trends, and breathtaking imagery—a world of inspiration, waiting to be held in your hands.

Beyond reading, these magazines also offer incredible opportunities for photographers to get published, submit their work, and even participate in prestigious photography competitions—making them not just a source of learning, but a platform to showcase your talent to the world.

International Photography Magazines

These selections are based on recommendations from my photographer friend, Abhishek Anupam, who pursued his MA in Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in the UK, along with my own in-depth research into the content and history of these magazines. Notably, the first two magazines on this list were part of his university’s recommended curriculum.

© Outdoor Photography

Origin: UK | Established: 2003 | Frequency: Monthly | Travel & Nature

Outdoor Photography is the UK’s leading magazine for landscape, wildlife, and adventure photography, blending stunning imagery with expert techniques and location guides, all while promoting conservation. This is my personal recommendation, given my strong inclination towards travel and nature photography, and also because of the scale and excellence of GMC Publications—an award-winning publisher and distributor, known for publishing several other great magazines like Black+White Photography and Breathe.

I love black and white photography for its pure, timeless quality—it strips away the distraction of color, reducing the image to form, light, and emotion. The absence of color enhances abstraction, allowing textures, contrasts, and compositions to take center stage, making the viewer engage more deeply. It feels raw and poetic, distilling a scene to its essence and revealing stories that might otherwise be overlooked.

While the subscription cost of these international photography magazines can be steep, especially with international shipping to your country, opting for the digital version is a great alternative, ensuring you don’t miss out on the sheer quality of their content. To reduce costs further, you might consider purchasing just access to their archive, as their content tends to be evergreen and timeless. You can also simply visit the websites of these magazines and discover valuable insights to learn and take away.

Alternatively, you can find the digital editions of these magazines on Magzter at a subscription price as low as INR 199 per month or INR 1999 per year.

It saddens me to see the decline of photography and art magazines in India. My recent realization that the version of Better Photography I once cherished wasn’t the original only heightened my concern for the state of print media in the country. Likewise, other magazines I had admired, such as Click (2021-23) published by the Photographic Society of India, and Chiiz have either been discontinued or struggling to meet the demands of professionals in terms of fresh content, quality, timely delivery or seamless subscription.

Nonetheless, a few gems are still available for a nominal subscription cost, especially without the burden of international shipping, offering exceptional value and high-quality content.

Note: The Indian edition of Better Photographya distinct publication from the original Australian Better Photography—has been discontinued.

To learn photography and develop a strong sense of aesthetics, you don’t need to subscribe to a dedicated photography magazine only. For inspiration, you can explore fashion magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar to see top-tier fashion and commercial photography. Similarly, subject-focused magazines like Architectural Digest (AD) showcase professional, refined interior and architecture photography. I subscribe to Condé Nast Traveller for travel-related content and inspiration.

Having said that, as you flip through the pages of these magazines, just do not forget to take a moment to pause and pay attention to the composition, post-processing style, interplay of colors, and the clever use of props.
