Ever found yourself doom-scrolling through social media, drowning in an endless stream of random photos and reels, yet struggling to find true inspiration? I have—more times than I can count. Time is precious, and when I dedicate mine to learning and creative growth, I want to engage with content that challenges me, inspires me, presents a different perspective and elevates my craft. But time and again, picking up my phone for meaningful inspiration has felt hopelessly futile, leading me back to my old, trusted companions—books and magazines.
The Magic of Print: A Nostalgic Connection
Thinking of books and magazines, takes me to the yesteryears of stopping by a newsstand, flipping through those glossy pages, the scent of fresh print, the touch of a magazine in my hands—an experience no screen can replicate. As a kid in the ’90s, I remember grabbing the latest issue of my favorite kids magazine, devouring every page in just two days, and then eagerly waiting for the next one. That tangible connection felt deeply personal. Today, with digital content overflooding every corner of our lives, I find myself longing for those carefully curated pages even more, particularly when I see print magazines disappearing day by day.
In a World of Infinite Scroll, Is There Still Room for Photography Magazines?
Coming back to the reality, where social media thrives and algorithms dictates the terms, we are just reduced to “user” as opposed to a “reader”. Having wasted my time on social media in early years, now I solely rely on books, magazines and serious blogs for a real learning. The reason is obvious, unlike social media content where there is no curation or quality control, every photograph and story featured in a top photography magazine goes through rigorous selection, expert editing, and thoughtful curation, making it a far superior resource for learning and inspiration. Every image, every article in a magazine is chosen with a purpose, making it a far richer resource for those who seek to truly understand and grow in their craft. If you want to move beyond trends and instant gratification, if you crave something more than just another scroll through a never-ending feed, investing in a great photography magazine is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.
Whether you’re a travel photographer chasing golden-hour landscapes, a street shooter drawn to the poetry of everyday life, or an admirer of fine art, the right magazine can be your gateway to new techniques, industry trends, and breathtaking imagery—a world of inspiration, waiting to be held in your hands.
Beyond Reading: Get Published and Compete
Beyond reading, these magazines also offer incredible opportunities for photographers to get published, submit their work, and even participate in prestigious photography competitions—making them not just a source of learning, but a platform to showcase your talent to the world.
In this guide, I’ve handpicked the best international photography magazines worth subscribing to—each offering a wealth of inspiration, expert insights, and stunning imagery.
And if you are here to see your photos in print, these top international photography magazines are waiting for your best shots! 📸✨
International Photography Magazines
My Top 3 Picks
These selections are based on recommendations from my photographer friend, Abhishek Anupam, who pursued his MA in Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in the UK, along with my own in-depth research into the content and history of these magazines. Notably, the first two magazines on this list were part of his university’s recommended curriculum.
1. Aperture

Origin: New York, USA | Established: 1952 | Frequency: Quarterly
Aperture, a nonprofit publishing institution, was founded by legendary photographers including Ansel Adams, Minor White, Barbara Morgan, Dorothea Lange, and Nancy Newhall, among others. Committed to fostering insight, community, and understanding through photography, the magazine envisions a future where the power of images sparks curiosity, creativity, and equity while amplifying diverse voices and creating inclusive opportunities for artists, writers, and enthusiasts.

First published in 1854, the British Journal of Photography has evolved into the world’s longest-running and most influential photography publication. 3. Outdoor Photography

Origin: UK | Established: 2003 | Frequency: Monthly | Travel & Nature
Outdoor Photography is the UK’s leading magazine for landscape, wildlife, and adventure photography, blending stunning imagery with expert techniques and location guides, all while promoting conservation. This is my personal recommendation, given my strong inclination towards travel and nature photography, and also because of the scale and excellence of GMC Publications—an award-winning publisher and distributor, known for publishing several other great magazines like Black+White Photography and Breathe.

Black & White Photography Magazines
I love black and white photography for its pure, timeless quality—it strips away the distraction of color, reducing the image to form, light, and emotion. The absence of color enhances abstraction, allowing textures, contrasts, and compositions to take center stage, making the viewer engage more deeply. It feels raw and poetic, distilling a scene to its essence and revealing stories that might otherwise be overlooked.

Pro Tip
While the subscription cost of these international photography magazines can be steep, especially with international shipping to your country, opting for the digital version is a great alternative, ensuring you don’t miss out on the sheer quality of their content. To reduce costs further, you might consider purchasing just access to their archive, as their content tends to be evergreen and timeless. You can also simply visit the websites of these magazines and discover valuable insights to learn and take away.
Alternatively, you can find the digital editions of these magazines on Magzter at a subscription price as low as INR 199 per month or INR 1999 per year.
Indian Photography Magazines
It saddens me to see the decline of photography and art magazines in India. My recent realization that the version of Better Photography I once cherished wasn’t the original only heightened my concern for the state of print media in the country. Likewise, other magazines I had admired, such as Click (2021-23) published by the Photographic Society of India, and Chiiz have either been discontinued or struggling to meet the demands of professionals in terms of fresh content, quality, timely delivery or seamless subscription.
Nonetheless, a few gems are still available for a nominal subscription cost, especially without the burden of international shipping, offering exceptional value and high-quality content.
Note: The Indian edition of Better Photography—a distinct publication from the original Australian Better Photography—has been discontinued.
Pro Tip
To learn photography and develop a strong sense of aesthetics, you don’t need to subscribe to a dedicated photography magazine only. For inspiration, you can explore fashion magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar to see top-tier fashion and commercial photography. Similarly, subject-focused magazines like Architectural Digest (AD) showcase professional, refined interior and architecture photography. I subscribe to Condé Nast Traveller for travel-related content and inspiration.
Having said that, as you flip through the pages of these magazines, just do not forget to take a moment to pause and pay attention to the composition, post-processing style, interplay of colors, and the clever use of props.
Conclusion
In a world where photography content is often reduced to quick tutorials and gear reviews, a well-curated magazine can be a breath of fresh air—offering depth, artistic vision, and intellectual engagement. The magazines featured in this article go beyond the basics, providing a gateway to photographic discourse, inspiration, and creative evolution.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or an aspiring photographer, the right magazine can shape your perspective, challenge your ideas, and introduce you to new ways of seeing the world.

Dear Readers,
What began as a simple listicle soon evolved into a full-fledged deep dive, thanks to the extensive research and fact-checking that went into it. My primary goal wasn’t just to compile a list of photography magazines—it was to ensure that every recommendation was relevant, active, and worth your time. If you’ve ever Googled “best photography magazines to subscribe to,” you’ve probably encountered lists featuring publications that no longer exist or haven’t been updated in months. Sifting through misinformation took more effort than curating the best picks.
Along the way, I unearthed several lesser-known photography magazines that, in many ways, outshine mainstream commercial ones—those often saturated with advertisements and gear-centric content. When I seek out a photography magazine, I want more than just technical tips or camera reviews (which are easily found online). I look for depth, artistic exploration, and unique perspectives that challenge the way we see and create.
To ensure this list truly reflected that ethos, I reached out to my friend Abhishek, who generously shared insights from his MA in Photography course at the University for the Creative Arts, UK. His recommendations provided a solid foundation for this article, enriching it with resources that serious photographers and visual storytellers would genuinely appreciate.
Hours of effort have gone into what was meant to be a simple compilation, and I hope this carefully researched list helps you find a publication that resonates with your artistic sensibilities.
